Incredibly rare trompe l'oeil sheath dress from the late 1920's or early 1930's. Likely sold as a sew-at-home kit, this dress is from the first trompe l'oeil trend started by Elsa Schiaparelli's knitwear pieces in the late 1920's. This is a fantastic piece of fashion history directly inspired by one of fashion's most legendary designers.

Trompe L'oeil (or "deceive the eye" in English) is one of Schiaparelli's most notable fashion design innovations that has become synonymous with her brand and widely recognized as a key design element of fashion from the 1920's and 30's as a whole.

This dress is a wonderful example of early trompe l'oeil that is in astonishingly nice condition for its age. There are a few small scattered discolorations and 1 tiny fabric separation (see image gallery for reference), but otherwise this garment is nearly pristine. The print is as vivid as the day it was made and the 90 year old fabric is still surprisingly white. The nep texture in the dress is yellowed - I'm not sure if that was the intentional design of the fabric or if those fibers are showing more age than the rest of the fabric. See image gallery for reference - the effect is mild, but a bit more pronounced in real life.

The panels are hand screened onto a rayon or rayon/silk blend nep-textured fabric. The body is machine sewn and all of the seams, hems, and internal binding are hand finished.

MEASUREMENTS:

Bust: up to 36", but would probably work best for 32" - 35" as the body is meant to have some room

Waist: 35"

Hips: up to 37", but would probably work best for 33" - 36" as the body is meant to have some room

Body Length: 37"
